Romanian-born Peter's earliest musical experience was listening to his grandfather, a priest, sing and lead the holy liturgical chant at the Bunavestire Romanian Orthodox Church in Cleveland. After a process of spiritual and physical awakening during a 16 day solo backpacking trip in Alaska north of the Arctic Circle at age 19, Peter decided to devote himself to music. He completed a B.A. in Jazz/Composition at the Mannes Conservatory in New York City studying with such luminaries as Reggie Workman and Richie Bierach. Peter also studied at the Institute of Sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with the electronic music guru Joel Ryan. Peter composes for dance and has premiered his music at The Kitchen in New York, The Virginia Ballet, The Romanian National Theatre and The Muider-Poort Theatre Amsterdam for choreographers Amy Cox, Tai Jimenez and Natasha Trifan and has also performed with Magpie Music Dance appearing with Han Bennick.
Peter is an accomplished saxophone, clarinet and flute player and appears regularly in New York City and internationally with different musical projects including Burnt Sugar, The Brooklyn Reperatory Ensemble, The Ray Abrams Big Band, Transdub Massiv featuring Me'shell Ndegeocello, Afrouzeh and the Show Band on Princess Cruises. Peter has been teaching for 7 years and has recently taught a series of saxophone masterclasses at the Romanian National Conservatory.
Peter is a highly trained and experienced musician, composer and teacher. In addition to being an accomplished performer on saxophone, clarinet and flute, Petre plays the piano, guitar and drum set. He is also proficient in various computer music editing and composing platforms including Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton Live and Sibelius.
Peter is committed to mastering music and has not given up his dream of being one of the world’s great woodwind performers. He enjoys working with youngsters and adults alike, imparting the feeling of joy he continues to receive from music. He finds it very rewarding patiently sharing his knowledge and love for music. There is nothing more terrible than teachers that misplace the natural fun of music study while striving to teach the technical aspects of playing an instrument. All aspects of music making can be fun and fulfilling. The goal is to keep the student curious and open to developing his or her abilities- in studying a musical instrument and in life. Lessons are catered to the individual student's needs.
