Three ways to get started

I love to teach and perform music. I have been playing piano since I was about 7 years old. I continued studying music in band playing the clarinet around the age of 9. Also, I have been singing alto in choir since I was about 12 years old. I am currently working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education. I have worked as a substitute teacher for many years educating a wide variety of ages.
I believe that playing music should be fun! For the first lesson, I like to learn about what the student already knows about piano and music in general. Then, I want to discover the student’s goals for piano – as a hobby or to become a professional pianist or teacher. Each student is unique so each lesson is tailored for that individual. If the student is a beginner, I will start with the basics – learning the names of the notes, hand positioning, and fingering – and advance on toward reading the notes on the staff. Once basic skills have been learned, I want to give the student the opportunity to choose music he/she wishes to learn. I focus on learning repertoire, scales, and just having fun!
Depending upon the age and experience, I start very basic by showing the student the piano and discussing the names of the keys. I want the student to have fun so at the end of the lesson the student is able to play whatever he/she wants to play.
