My musical education began early with both parents playing in a banjo/jazz band. Their encouragement fueled my love for singing, dance and piano. That coupled with perfect pitch led to my musical training beginning at the age of four and continuing throughout my childhood. In college my love for music continued by being placed in advanced piano and assisting in conducting several ensemble choirs. After graduating with a B.S. degree and some graduate work, I worked as an accompainist and also choir director at several schools. At that same time, I also was choir director and organist for one of the local churches. A few years later I begin building up my piano studio so I could teach full-time.
I feel that these experiences allow me to bring to my students a complete music education. I teach all aspects of music including ear training, performance, music appreciation, and theory. Because I am a member of the Music Teacher's Association of California, my students also may participate in this presitigious program called Cetificate of Merit. I also belong to the National Guild Association which affords them the opportunity to be adjudicated each year.
My students also have the opportunity to participate in several performances each year. These events vary from formal settings to peforming at retirement homes, Honor's Recital, Christmas, and the ever favorite the Halloween party.
Every student has the ability to play piano. Of course, some have more talent then others, but everyone can do well if smart practicing is stressed. Advancement in piano is completely up to the parent/sudent. I good work ethic is critical. I consider myself loving, but expect my students to make every effort to progress and do well. I have a studio of many talented childern. In my twenty-plus years of teaching, I am well-known in my area for producing many advanced students.
I teach the traditional method. I pride myself on gearing my program to fit the personality and interest of the student. I normally use the Faber Piano Adventures series, theory, one classical and a solo book. It is extremely important for the child to be interested and stimulated by his repertoire.
