About Me

Hi my name is Dave G. I have been playing professionally for over 20 years. I have studied with Gary Willis, Dale James, Charlie Banacos and others. I have a Jazz Performance Degree from the University of Calgary, a diploma in jazz performance from Grant MacEwan in Edmonton. I have played on numerous recordings across the country. I have recieved the Margaret Locke Scholarship for Strings, and the Edmonton Jazz Society Scholarship. I have played with great musicians from central Canada to Hawaii. I've also had the privelage to work with Grammy Award Winner Charles Brottman, Hoku and Hawaiin Music Award nominee Steve Seva, and Juno Award nominee Jon Buller.
I play jazz, fusion, funk, rock, progressive rock, latin, afro cuban, island music and classical, (on electric bass).

I like to motivate students, to teach them to learn but also enjoy practicing.  I believe that you need to learn some basic technique and practice routines, that will help you grow as a musician. I believe a student should study music that they are interested in, and to bring out what God has given them. When I am not playing music I like to spend time with my wife and two lovely dogs.

Lesson Details

I like to teach students the rudiments of music, how to read notes, how to play arpeggios, and scales, and theory, depending on what the student wants to achieve. As a student progresses I like to get them to improvise. How to construct a bass line, a solo, even some chording (on bass). Playing songs and learning how they are constructed can be fun. Stylistic approaches like slapping is also taught. I like to play with the student as a duet, in the lesson, this encourages the student to do some real life playing, and reveals what the student would like to work on.
