My name is Krzysztof. I am a native of Poland, and started playing the piano at age 5. My entire life has been dedicated to the piano ever since. I studied at the Warsaw Academy of Music and later graduated with high honors with a Master Degree in Piano Performance from the Academy of Music in Krakow, where I was privileged to be mentored under the famous Professor Ludwik Stefanski. During my studies, I won a series of scholarship competitions and performed in various places in Europe, receiving high critical acclaim. I emigrated to the United States in 1971, and received a teaching position at Villa Maria College and Institute of Music in Buffalo, N.Y. During this time, I performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and gave many recitals in the New York and Pennsylvania area, and received several awards. I was also instrumental in starting a student performing arts group at the University of Buffalo. In 1974, I moved to Los Angeles and continued teaching piano in the Beverly Hills and West Hollywood area. I became a resident of San Diego in 1976 and have taught at Grossmont Community College and other local colleges on an extension basis, the San Diego Unified School District, the Academy of Musical Arts, and in my private piano studio. I have also performed and given master classes at several colleges and universities in the western United States and Poland. I also recorded for radio and television. During the 37 years of my intensive teaching career, some of my students became famous concert artists and piano teachers themselves. I have had many students winners in local, national and international piano competitions including Van Cliburn, Chopin, Gina Bachauer, Master Players, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, and Joanna Hodges. I am an active member of the Music Teachers Association of California, San Diego Branch.
I enjoy teaching the Baroque, Classical and Romantic Music in which I was trained myself. My specialty is the music of Chopin and other Romantic composers, but I have no boundaries in which kind of repertoire I can teach, including Twentieth Century and popular music. I also teach Fundamentals of Piano Theory, commonly known as the Certificate of Merit. I put an emphasis on performing for those who desire to major in professional piano performance, however it is most important that you have enjoyment in playing the piano for yourself and others no matter what the occasion. I strongly believe that proper technique is the key to achieve an expressive and singing tone, flexibility of the hands and fingers, speed and good articulation. I do require consistency and discipline in taking lessons and in practicing. I allow my students to play their favorite pieces, but make suggestions according to their level of technical and musical ability. I have a vast library of music scores, vinyl and CD recordings to enhance learning or to assist when choosing a new piece. My teaching personality is friendly and relaxed. I teach with enthusiasm and dedication, and I expect the same from my students. Growing up in a house full of 7 pianists, 7 pianos and 2 harpsichords, I have plenty of stories, sometimes humorous, which I occasionally share with my students to embellish the lessons. Most of my students love my style and many have enjoyed taking lessons from me for years. On request, I can provide testimonials and letters from my beloved students and/or their parents.
