Three ways to get started

Hello! My name is Kedgrick! I started playing the oboe when I was in 5th grade, and the flute when I was a freshman in high school. Flute has become my main instrument, but I still have an immense love for the oboe. I am a pianist/youth choir director for Bel Aire M.B. Church in Markham, IL. I'm also a composer, which is a totally different place for me. In my playing, I love to focus on the highest musicality possible. Everything else falls into place after that. I've had some great opportunities in my relatively green musical experience. I've played with the Chicago Sinfonietta, I've played in Symphony Hall 3 times, I've played with my mentor Nicole Mitchell 3 times, one of which was on the grand stage at Millenium Park. I played for the legendary Sir James Galway while I was a part of Ravinia's Jazz Scholars. The opportunity I hold highest was being the first student ever to perform Euterpe: Concertino for Flute and Concert Band by Ferrer Ferran in the US in February 2007.
As a performer, I am into many types of music. Classical peformance is my passion, however I love jazz. I think flute is a great jazz instrument, however it is not recognized as one and that should be changed. Through jazz, I discovered afro-centric and new age music. That is really fun to perform, and I love the depth of it. I also love performing world music styles, it gives me the opportunity to open my ears as a composer to different sounds.
As a teacher, I like to cater my teaching to fit the needs of each individual student. I know that everyone learns differently, and everyone needs to be taught differently.
With beginners, I like to focus on developing a solid fundamental technique and playing with GREAT tone as soon as possible. I require beginners to have these books:
Rubank Elemantary Method: Flute (Rubank)
Trevor Wye Practice Book, Vol I: Tone (Novello)
7 Daily Exercises, Op. 5 by M.A. Reichert (Carl Fischer)
With intermediate students, I like to refine the technique as well as start them learning some standard literature. Intermediate students should have the same books as beginners, except the Rubank book, as well as:
Melodious and Progressive Studies, Book 1 by Robert Cavally (Southern Music)
Top Register Studies for Flute by Thomas J. Filas (Carl Fischer)
La Flute De Pan by Jules Mouquet (Southern Music)
As I am not expecting many oboe students, I will let you know what you need upon request.
For piano students, we will assess everything on the first lesson.
I am a pretty laid back person, however I do like to push my students to their fullest potential. I am only strict about outside practice. NOTHING will come of my lessons if you do not practice! Other than that, we will have ALOT of fun! I would also like to do small ensembles once I get enough students. I would also like to have a recital with my students every 3 months.
